Web 2.0

Wow, this is my first blog!  So new to me...., it all is a little overwhelming:)  My week has been very hectic...classes, work, having some sort of family life...hopefully things will settle down in the next few weeks.

Aside from participation, I hope that this blog will help with releasing some stress associated with the very busy week, and help me to organize my thoughts.

Until next time....

  1. Ok, well I thought the first week went ok...but maybe not....
Defining web 2.0 was more of a challenge that I initially thought it would be. You can see other opinions and views of what web 2.0 is, but it really is difficult putting it in "lamens" terms. An example would for sure be explaining it to Grandma. Grandma's not stupid, but certain aspects of today's technology just wasn't a part of her culture...so trying to explain in a way that should would REALLY understand the concept proved more difficult than expected.

My social media guru posting is exactly what I would expect in an add for employment. Personally, I feel that many ads are very vague, in that they want to connect to as many candidates as possible, but with social media, they should be more specific in the qualities and skill set. It does take a certain personality to be a "social butterfly" I must say...the ads from everyone in the class I viewed did a great job in including the absolute specifics, while also including "everyone requirements".

Not sure how everyone else feels, but I don't feel like we are organized, cut in squares, and laid out pretty. That's really how I work best, so the spontaneous nature of this course, I really feel will be a challenge. Ohhhh, and the rating of our peers, I'm dreading it already. I have tension in my shoulders already just thinking that I will be responsible for rating someone else's work:) It's going to be a long semester...maybe this will teach me to step a little out of my comfort zone of warm and fuzzies....

  2. Hmm.... is it chi or chili? Don't know much about the first, but like the last.

Part of my intentions with this course is to break participants out of the "organized, cut in squares and laid out pretty" mindset - the web just doesn't work that way - unless you can make it that way for yourself. This is challenging to many, embraced by others, but the ability to deal with chaos is a critical part of dealing with new media.

As an example, our school is trying to get a handle on using twitter, linkedIn, and facebook for communications, but found there were already hundreds of accounts setup with some kind of cpcc (our school) name in them already - over which they had (and have) zero control. How do you manage your brand when everyone else is already doing it, in ways you might not like?

  3. It's Chi...like Chi-Chi (short name for Chihuahua)--love them by the way!
For sure..this class is going to break me! It will be a challenge, but I like a challenge:) As for organizing the web, (as of right now), I don't think there is a way to do it. When a brand (such as CPCC, or any University), is so public, there is just no way possible to put a flag up everytime someone uses the name, mascot, etc. That would be nice to make anyone in the world that wanted to open an email account using "CPCC" in the name have to go through an "approval" process, but there just isn't enough men in the world to control this. Makes you think...what about the celebrities? How do they keep people from opening up facebook accounts, myspace pages, etc in or with their name?

  4. I agree with you on the rating the peers front.. I tend to feel like either I'm too tough or too easy on people.. never can seem to find that balance! But I am glad it's just a 1-3 rating scale.. it's either 1) you didn't do it or missed the mark altogether, 2) you did it and gave a decent effort but still didn't really hit the mark or 3) you did it and did it well. So that makes life a lil easier :)

Glad you reposted.. It's nice to get some additional opinions of the first week from you! And as for your editing posts comment back on moodle (in case no one told you) you can go from your "dashboard" (up in the upper right corner on blogger). There's an option to "edit posts" ;-)

Looking forward to working with you Shantell!
